Toothache: What to Do While You Wait for the Dentist

Pain relief can help you cope, but it cannot repair a damaged tooth.
Book the right help
See a dentist if toothache lasts more than two days, pain relief is not helping, or you have fever, pain on biting, a bad taste or a swollen cheek or jaw.
While you wait
Choose soft foods, avoid chewing on the sore side and use a soft toothbrush. Avoid very hot, cold or sweet foods. A pharmacist can check which pain relief is suitable for you. Children should not use salt-water rinses.
Know the emergency signs
Swelling around the eye or neck, or mouth or neck swelling that makes breathing, swallowing or speaking difficult, requires emergency care. Do not delay because a painkiller temporarily reduces the discomfort.
