St. John's Wort: Check Your Medicines Before Taking It

Herbal does not mean interaction-free. This supplement needs a careful check.
Why the interaction check matters
St. John's wort is a herbal product often marketed for mood. It can reduce the effectiveness of several medicines, including contraceptive pills, warfarin and some seizure, transplant or heart medicines. Some interactions can be serious.
Do not combine it casually
Taking it with certain antidepressants or other serotonin-affecting medicines can cause dangerous side effects. It may also increase sensitivity to sunlight. Pregnancy and breastfeeding bring additional safety concerns, so seek professional advice.
Bring the full list
Before starting it, show a pharmacist or clinician every medicine and supplement you use, including the exact product label. If already taking it alongside medicines, get advice promptly about the safest next steps. Do not replace prescribed treatment for depression with a supplement on your own.
