HbA1c Explained: Understanding Your Longer-Term Glucose Result

Your HbA1c is a conversation starter, not a score of personal success.
What the test measures
HbA1c is a blood test that reflects average glucose over roughly two to three months. It gives a longer-term view than a single finger-prick reading.
Your target is personal
Ask your diabetes team what range is appropriate for you and when to repeat the test. Targets and testing schedules depend on your circumstances. Do not change medicines based on a number without discussing it.
Bring useful questions
Ask how your result compares with previous tests and what one practical change would help. Bring glucose records and details of any low readings or symptoms. HbA1c does not replace your usual glucose checks or urgent advice when you feel unwell.
