Island Pharmacy TCI Oral health guide: Give your smile some care

If your mouth stays dry, your teeth need attention too.

Look for a possible trigger

Dehydration, mouth breathing and some medicines can cause dry mouth. Persistent symptoms may have other causes. Check your medicine leaflet, but do not stop prescribed treatment without advice.

Make comfort part of your day

Take regular sips of water. Sugar-free gum may help if you can chew safely. Brush twice daily and consider alcohol-free mouthwash. Reduce alcohol and excessive caffeine, and ask a pharmacist about suitable saliva substitutes.

When to seek advice

Arrange a check if symptoms last several weeks, interfere with eating or speaking, or come with pain, swelling, bleeding or white patches. Mention increased urination or dry eyes. Dry mouth increases the risk of tooth decay, so keep dental appointments.
