Vitamin D Supplements: More Is Not Always Better
More is not always better.
Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and supports bones and muscles. Taking more than you need does not automatically add more benefit.
Check the whole supplement list
Vitamin D may be in your multivitamin as well as a separate bottle. Bring every supplement and medicine you take to a pharmacist or clinician so they can check the combined amount and possible interactions.
Avoid choosing a high dose yourself
Excess vitamin D from supplements can cause harm, including nausea, weakness and kidney problems. Your needs depend on factors such as age and health. A clinician may prescribe a higher dose for a diagnosed deficiency, but that is different from selecting one without advice.
Ask a useful question
Before buying, ask what amount is suitable and for how long. Discuss any change to a prescribed course with your clinician.
