UTI Symptoms: When to Seek Care Instead of Waiting
Burning when you pee? Get advice.
Burning when you pee, needing to go often or urgently, and cloudy urine can be UTI symptoms. Get advice instead of relying on a home remedy to clear an infection.
Ask for an assessment
A clinician can decide whether tests or antibiotics are needed. Rest and drink enough fluids. Cranberry products and cystitis sachets have not been shown to treat an established infection.
Seek urgent care
Get urgent medical advice for fever or shivering, pain in the lower tummy or back under the ribs, or blood in the urine. Pregnancy, diabetes, a weakened immune system, or symptoms in men also need prompt assessment. Seek help if symptoms worsen or do not improve within 48 hours of treatment.
Emergency signs
New confusion, marked drowsiness or difficulty speaking needs emergency medical care. These symptoms should not wait for a pharmacy visit.
