Tight Hairstyles and Hair Loss: Protect Your Hairline
Tight style? Protect your hairline.
A style should not leave your scalp hurting. Repeated pulling from tight braids, buns, ponytails or extensions can cause traction alopecia, a form of hair loss.
Ease the tension early
Loosen styles around the hairline and alternate them with relaxed styles. Heavy extensions can add pulling. Change a style promptly if it causes pain, stinging or crusting; do not wait for it to loosen by itself.
Look for small changes
Broken hairs at the forehead, a receding hairline or thinning where hair is pulled are reasons to act. Gentle styling matters for children too.
Get the cause checked
Arrange a dermatologist's assessment when you notice hair loss. Hair can be lost for several reasons, and prolonged traction can cause permanent damage. Do not assume an oil or supplement will reverse it.
