Swimmer's Ear: Simple Habits After the Pool or Beach

1 min read

After a swim, protect your ears.

An itchy, painful ear after swimming may be swimmer's ear, an infection of the outer ear canal. Trapped moisture can allow bacteria to grow.

Let water drain

Tilt your head so each ear faces downward, then dry the outside gently with a towel. A swimming cap or properly fitted swimming earplugs can help keep water out.

Leave the canal alone

Keep cotton buds, fingers and other objects out of the ear canal. Earwax helps protect it. Ask a healthcare professional before using ear-drying drops; avoid them with ear tubes, a damaged eardrum, ear drainage or an existing infection.

Pain or discharge needs checking

Contact a healthcare professional if your ear hurts or fluid drains from it. Prevention tips do not replace treatment for an infection.
