Secondhand Smoke: Why an Open Window Is Not Enough
Open windows are not enough.
Smoking beside an open window does not make indoor air safe. Secondhand smoke can move between rooms and remain indoors after a cigarette is finished.
Make the rule clear
Keep the whole home and car free from smoking, including when children are away. Tell visitors and household members before they light up.
Do not rely on air fresheners
Fans, air conditioning, open windows and air purifiers do not eliminate exposure. Smoking in a bathroom or another bedroom does not protect the rest of the household.
Support the next step
Quitting protects the person who smokes and those around them. Ask a healthcare professional about support and suitable treatments. If an earlier attempt did not last, it is still worth trying again with a plan.
