Ready to Quit Smoking? Plan for Your First Craving
Your next craving needs a plan.
A craving can feel urgent, but it usually passes within minutes. Preparing a response before it arrives can make quitting smoking feel more manageable.
Name your triggers
Notice the situations linked to smoking: a work break, stress, driving or being around other smokers. Write down one alternative for each trigger.
Make the next craving easier
Change your break routine, take a short walk, listen to music or call a supportive friend. Remove cigarettes, lighters and ashtrays from your surroundings. Ask someone you trust to be your quit buddy.
Get support with withdrawal
A pharmacist or clinician can discuss suitable stop-smoking options, including nicotine replacement therapy. A plan that combines support with appropriate treatment can help with cravings. Review what worked each week and adjust the plan when a situation catches you off guard.
