Persistent Cough: When It Is Time to Get Checked

Cough lingering? Get it checked.

A cough can linger after an infection, but it should not be ignored indefinitely. Arrange medical advice if yours lasts longer than three weeks.

Keep the basics simple

Rest and drink fluids. Ask a pharmacist before choosing a cough remedy, especially for a child, during pregnancy or alongside other medicines. These products may ease symptoms but do not necessarily address the cause.

Book sooner for other changes

Unexplained weight loss or a weakened immune system are reasons to get checked. Tell the clinician when the cough began and what else you have noticed.

Do not wait on warning signs

Seek urgent assessment for coughing up blood, chest pain, breathing difficulty or a rapidly worsening cough. Severe breathlessness, inability to speak normally, blue or grey lips, or sudden confusion needs emergency help immediately.
