Period Pain: When Cramps Need More Than Self-Care
Period pain disrupting your day?
Period cramps are common, but pain that interrupts work, school or everyday activities deserves medical attention. You do not have to simply put up with it.
Try gentle comfort measures
A warm bath, gentle walking or a wrapped hot-water bottle may help. Protect your skin from heat. A pharmacist can advise whether a pain reliever is suitable for you; mention other medicines, health conditions and any possibility of pregnancy.
Know when to seek advice
Arrange an appointment if periods become heavier, irregular or more painful, or if you bleed between periods or have pain during sex, urination or bowel movements.
Get urgent help for a change in pain
Seek urgent medical advice if pelvic or period pain is severe or worse than usual and painkillers have not helped. Different causes may need different treatment.
