Mosquito Bite Prevention: Pack Protection Before You Go
Pack bite protection first.
Bite prevention belongs on your travel checklist. Mosquitoes can spread infections, and protection starts before you unpack.
Pack useful protection
Choose an EPA-registered insect repellent, such as one containing DEET or picaridin, and follow its label. Pack loose-fitting long sleeves and trousers. Choose screened or air-conditioned accommodation, or use an appropriate mosquito net when needed.
Plan before departure
Check current advice for your destination and speak with a travel-health professional four to six weeks before leaving, when possible. Your itinerary and health history affect which precautions you need.
Remember the return trip
Continue preventing bites for three weeks after travel. If you develop fever, headache, muscle or joint pain, or a rash, seek medical care promptly and mention where you travelled. Repellent helps prevent bites; it does not diagnose or treat an infection.
