Common Cold Self-Care: What Helps and When to Get Advice
A cold needs care, not a shortcut.
A common cold usually improves within one to two weeks. A blocked nose, sore throat and cough can be tiring, but there is no instant fix.
Keep care simple
Rest, drink fluids and wash your hands regularly. Catch coughs and sneezes in tissues and throw them away promptly.
Check before combining products
Cold remedies can contain several ingredients. Ask a pharmacist before combining them with painkillers, so you do not accidentally take the same ingredient twice. Check suitability for children, pregnancy and existing health conditions. Antibiotics do not treat the viruses that cause colds.
Know when to seek advice
Get medical advice if you are getting worse, have a high temperature for more than three days, or have not improved after ten days. Breathlessness or chest pain needs prompt medical assessment.
