Taking Biotin? Tell Your Clinician Before a Blood Test
Blood test soon? Mention biotin.
Your hair-and-nail supplement belongs on your medicines list. Biotin, also called vitamin B7, can interfere with some laboratory tests and produce misleading results.
Check more than the front label
Biotin may appear in multivitamins, B-complex products and hair, skin and nail supplements. Bring the bottle or a clear photo showing the ingredients and amount per serving.
Tell the clinician and laboratory
Share what you take and when you last took it before blood is collected. Ask the team whether you need to pause it and for how long. Do not assume one waiting period applies to every product or test.
Do not delay urgent care
Some affected tests include thyroid tests and certain troponin tests used to assess heart injury. If you need urgent care, seek it promptly and mention your supplements. A reassuring result should be interpreted alongside your symptoms and clinical assessment.
