Baby Fever: When a Temperature Needs Urgent Advice
Small baby. Fever? Act early.
With a young baby, age matters as much as the temperature. Use a digital thermometer under the armpit, following its instructions.
Get urgent medical advice
A baby under three months needs urgent assessment for a temperature of 38°C or higher, or suspected fever. At three to six months, seek urgent advice at 39°C or higher, or if you think they have a high temperature. Do not wait for a higher reading if your baby seems unwell.
Emergency signs
Call local emergency services for difficulty breathing, being hard to wake, a first seizure, or a rash that does not fade when pressed. Blue, grey or unusually pale lips or skin also need emergency help.
While arranging care
Continue normal feeds and watch for fewer wet nappies. Avoid overwrapping. Check medicine suitability with a clinician or pharmacist; young babies need particular care. Seek advice whenever you are worried.
